Seeking inspiration from the early 70s, Riccardo Tisci’s work for Givenchy Spring 2010 Haute Couture was nothing short of French eroticism. From the smoky glittery eyes to the striking red lips seen on the runway, the Givenchy show provided a sexual edge to the otherwise decadent Haute Couture scene in Paris. Immaculate and sharp tailoring was seen on tailcoats paired with tuxedo trousers but of course, no Givenchy show would be complete without Riccardo’s touch. Ombré ostrich feathers of the top beneath, peeked out of the opening of the jacket, a hint of what was to come for the following looks.
Sheer fabrics, spiral-cut organza and ruffled tops and dresses added a touch of sensuality while black lace, either layered to form a long gown, or seen on a jumpsuit, provided the erotic charge that Riccardo had playfully employed throughout the entire collection. The show ended with a disco-bright splash of colours; purple, electric blue and glitter green. Sequined jumpsuits done in geometric patterns were reminiscent of the discotheque days, while the last two dresses with hems of purple balls of ruffled tulle had left the audience blown away and wanting for more.
Sophisticated yet erotic. Riccardo Tisci’s work may have taken inspiration from the ‘70s but the magic of the young Italian designer seemed to have made this collection ever so young and exhilarating. Fashion may have found its new dream haute couturier. Or even its new l’enfant terrible.

The Givenchy show was easily the best haute couture collection this spring.
